December 2006 Minutes
GARY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION
The association met on December 10, 2006 at the community room with 8 members present.
Minutes after correction of $396.13 was raised at pancake feed and the Gary Interstate was disturbed to Clear Lake and Canby, minutes were approved. The treasures report was approved as given.
Motion made and carried to pay bills for cement, rebar, Canby News for buffalo supper ad, and gate city store for items used at the Appreciation days concession stand.
200 Gary Interstate were distributed for the month of December to Clear Lake, Canby and businesses in Gary & some individuals.
Fay Stone will check on price of plaque to list the donors for the microfilm.
Fay Stone reported on the price of postcards packs being $500.27 for 250 packs of 10 cards. Marlene Lien reported on the price on various crocks and tooth pick holders. The toothpick holders being approximate $6.75 each with logo extra and the crock’s price depended on where we got them from and the size. Motion was made to go ahead and get postcards, toothpick holder 36 of them, and 1quart crock. Marlene Lein will get a more definite price on the crocks for the January meeting so we may pick a vendor for this item.
Roger Baer reported that the City of Gary agreed to a 25 year easement on Outlot 12 to be granted to the Gary Historical Association.
Cement for the machinery was poured on November 15 and the machinery is back on the cement. Mike Nosbush headed the project with help from Robert Wynn, Leon Pederson, Mike Miller, Roger Baer, and Will Stone. The cement pad measures 30 x 70. Mike and Leon put the machinery back on the pad.
The report for the buffalo supper was a profit of approximately $43.00 with one outstanding payment to be received.
Fay Stone reported the bake sale had a very good turn out with 19 people donating several items each. Two large tables and card table were filled to overflowing. The profit on the sale was $437.50.
Vince Foley agreed to speak at the celebration if he does not have a conflict.
Motion made & approved to send out a fund raising letter in December. The committee will be Roger Baer, Sharon Stuerman, Will Stone, Patti Haas, Eldeen Baer, & Marlene Lein.
Motion made & approved to fund 100 calendars for the 135th celebration with profits going to the 135th committee. The calendars would be number 1-100 and buyers would be eligible for a drawing to be held during the celebration for cash rewards. Committee for this project is Roger & Sharolotte Baer, Fay Stone, & Pat Denelsbeck. The calendar would be 12 pictures of Gary and significant dates would be noted on the selected days of the month.
Several options were discussed as to fund raisers we can have for the following year, pancake feed, making cranberry relish, & flea market sale.
Motion made to adjourn meeting. Next meeting will be January 20, 2007.

November 11, 2006
The association met on October 14, 2006 at the community room with 8 members present.
Minutes were approved as read. The treasures report was approved as given.
Motion made and carried to pay bills.
The mailing out of the Gary Interstate to out of town people was discussed. Motion made donation on $20.00 to receive the Gary Interstate by mail for 1 year.
Roger displayed some Gary memorabilia that is on ebay for sale.
250 copies of the Gary Interstate were distributed in October.
Roger is going to check on the Deed for the museum land.
It was decided that memberships would run from July to July.
Preparations were made for the buffalo supper

September 16, 2006
The regular meeting was held on 8-19 at the museum with 8 members present. The minutes were approved as read. The treasures report was approved as given.
Motion made and approved to pay the bills.
There was update on whistle house and RR building projects.
Reports were given on the operations of the concession stands.
Motion made and approved to put murals on the walls of the whistle house when completed.
Motion made and approved to accept donation of the band shell in the park if the city decides to donate it to the historical association.
Motion made and approved to have a breakfast pancake feed on Sept. 24 if the senior citizens soup day is not on that day.
The first issue of the historical associations version of the Gary Interstate has hit the streets and is being well accepted.
Motion made and approved to have scout troop clean up the creek bank and surrounding area as a project of theirs.
Motion made and approved to get paper and toner as needed.
Next meeting will be Sept. 16 at 10am at the museum.

JULY 21, 2006
The Association met on July 20, 2006 with 10 members present. Sec. Report was read and approved. Treasure report was absent.
Roger informed us that the building permit from the city to move in the railroad buildings was approved.
Names of dignitaries were discussed for 2007 celebration some names suggested were Jim or Eleanor Cochran, Margaret Saltee, Bernice Severson, Allen Woolworth, Archie Hill, Mary Nosbush.
On going projects were discussed.
Motion passed to obtain Gary Interstate Corp. name.
Connie Severson will be the editor of the Gary Interstate.
Concession stand on the upper ball field made a profit of $35.75.
Motion passed to buy 500 receipts 2 part in book form for donations and membership to be purchased from Clear Lake Courier.
Next meeting 10:00 on Aug. 19. at the museum.

GARY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION
July 20,2006
The annual meeting was held at the museum with 11 members present.
The treasures report was approved as given.
The minutes were approved as read
Nominations for directors were Margaret Salte, Ione Schulte, Mary Nosbush,Vera Sween,
Leon Webber. Those elected were: Mary Nosbush 3year term, Vera Sween 2year term and Leon Webber 1 year term. Officers elected by a unanimous ballot were: Roger Baer, Pres., Sharon Stuerman, Vice-pres., Will Stone Secretary, and Patte Haas Treasure.
On going projects were discussed.
Motion made and approved to operate the south concession stand when activities warrant.
Motion made and approved to operated the concession stand for appreciation days.
Motion made and approved to get two part membership and receipt cards.
Next meeting will be July 20 at 7:30 at the museum
June 2006 Minutes
The association met on June 24 at the museum with nine members present.
Minutes were approved as read and the treasures report was approved as given.
Museum hours for the holiday weekend were set.
There was discussion on contacting people willing to serve as director by having their name put on the ballot. Names will be presented at the annual meeting July 1.
There was discussion on dates for next years celebration. It was noted that the deadline for the Glacial Lakes Tourism Guide ad would be September 1.
Motion made and approved to buy eight paddle locks all keyed the same.
Motion to adjourn and carried.
Next meeting will be the annual meeting at the museum on July 1, at 10:00 a.m.
June 2006 Minutes
The Gary Historical Association met on June 15th at the museum with eight members present.
The minutes were approved as read. The treasurers report was approved as given.
Motion made and passed to pay bills.
The baseball project is progressing and the display will be ready soon. This display is of the Gary teams, but includes write-ups and names from teams in the surrounding areas and should be of interest to anyone who played, or had relatives who played, in the early day games to present.
The building permits have been secured for the railroad buildings.
The Gary Interstate microfilm project is now complete. All remaining microfilms will be ordered and available at the Gary city Library. This was a big project. Thank you to all who donated to the microfilm reader and the micro films. A plaque will be made and brass plates with all the donors will be listed. If you missed the boat and would still like to be a sponsor for the film, you may do so for a $35 donation. Your name will be listed on the plaque for the years wanted and the money will be put to good use on other projects.
It was noted the association does own the old jail (whistle) house building.
Classes for the use of microfilm machine will be on Friday June 15 at 5 and 7 p.m.
The Prindle family donated bibles and articles to the museum.
Various projects discussed were cement under machinery, painting and finishing the jail (whistle) house building, pancake feed for appreciation days, picture displays on street corners and adding pages to our web site www.garysd.com
A special meeting will be held on June 24th to prepare for the annual meeting on July 1, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the museum
May 2006 Minutes
The Association met on May 12th with eight members present. Minutes were approved as read.
The baseball display project is progressing.
Report was given on the visit of the state historian for the area, Jason Haug, who looked at various buildings in Gary and assessed their historical value. The group was informed on the processes that it will take to preserve these buildings and how to access funds to preserve buildings.
A storage tube for the Lake Elsie picture has been purchased. It will be stored in the school house building.
Building permits will be applied for to move the railroad buildings to the designated sites.
Project to be completed this summer is the painting of the old jail (whistle) house.
The web site is now up and running. It is a work in progress. Click on www.garysd.com and the Gary web site will come up. Then click on Gary Historical Association and our sight will come up. Then click on the page you want to view.
Work nights will be on June 8th and 15th beginning at 6:30 p.m. The business meeting will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15th.
April 2006 Minutes
Gary Historical Association
The Gary Historical Association met on April 15 at the Gary fire hall meeting room with 11 members present. Minutes were read and approved. The treasure’s report was approved as given.
The baseball display project for the museum is progressing with the collection of articles and pictures to be put on display.
Original papers from the walls of the railroad buildings have been removed and are in storage for now. Copies will be made and laminated to be put back in buildings after they have been moved.
The city approved space on their web site for the Gary Historical Association. The web site for the historical association will be developed as time allows. Some info is now on the site. All you need to do is type in www.garysd.com and click on Gary Historical Association.
Classes on how to use the micro-film reader will be set up in the near future. Notices of dates and times will be posted on ITC TV and in the paper.
There was discussion on various projects for the summer and planning for the Gary’s 135th and the historical’s 40th anniversaries. People of the community and surrounding area are encourage to volunteer and help out where and when needed. There is much to be done and involvement from the community is very much needed and appreciated.
The next meeting will be in the museum at the historical park on Friday May 12 at 7:30 pm. Note day and time change! Everyone is welcome to attend.
March 2006 Minutes
Gary Historical Association, April 15, 2006
The Gary Historical Association met on March 18 with 12 members present. Minutes were read and approved. The treasurers report was read and approved.
The large painting of Lake Elsie has been found wrapped in plastic at the legion hall. A motion made and passed to buy a tube and store the mural in the school house at the museum park.
The old railroad building were looked at and measured. They are about 10 x 12 and in movable condition. A motion made and passed to accept the donation of the buildings. 16 micro films of the interstates are now at the library. A steady push is being made to finish obtaining all the microfilms. A grant has been applied for. Sometime in the future a class will be conducted at the library to show interested persons how to use the microfilm reader.
Motion made and approved to put historical web site on the Gary web site with approval of the council.
Work on baseball display at museum for the summer is progressing.
There was a brief discussion on the Historical Ass’n. possibly taking over the all school reunion.
There was discussion on celebrating the Historical assn's. 40th year anniversary and the town of Gary's 135th in 2007.

February 2006 Minutes

March 18, 2006
3:00 p.m.
The regular meeting of the association was held at the fire hall meeting room on Feb. 18, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. There were 14 members present. Treasures report was given and approved as read. The minutes were read and approved. Final plans were made for the pancake feed to be held on Feb. 19 at the fire hall.
There was nothing new in location of Lake Elsie picture.
16 Micro films have been ordered. There are 31 available to be purchased yet. This project is to be completed this year.
Because of snow and ice no one has been able to look at old railroad buildings at Mrs. Vernon Blaine property.
It was reported that a hazardous materials assessment and feasibility study will be conducted with the owner’s approval on the former blind school campus.
There was discussion on buffalo supper date. A motion was made and approved to find out when Minnesota pheasant season opened.
Discussion on annual meeting date. Motion made and approved to move that annual meeting for the Gary Historical Association be held on July 1, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the fire hall meeting room.
A letter will be drafted by the secretary to be included in the all school reunion letter that is being sent out.
Motion made and approved to draft a letter to gather e-mail addresses for future references.
There was discussion on developing a web page. It was noted that the city already has a web page. Options will be pursued and information brought to the next meeting. A reminder that the City of Gary does have a web site at www.garysd.com .
Artifacts, pictures and other memorabilia are being gathered for the baseball display to be set up at the museum for the summer. This will cover baseball history in Gary from first teams to the last amateur team in the mid 1980’s.
It was noted we are listed as an association on our IRS ( C ) (3) and society on our South Dakota non-profit certificate. These need to be the same. The secretary Will Stone is working on this.
It was noted that the association was organized on Feb. 12, 1967 and that next year will mark the 40th year of the Gary Historical Association.
The next meeting will be March 18, 10:00 a.m. – changed to 3:00 p.m. – at the fire hall meeting room.
