September 2008 Minutes
The Gary Historical Association met on September 20, 2008 at the Museum with 7 present. President Roger Baer called the meeting to order and the Secretary’s was read and approved with one correction. Kent Goplin has the small barn that we were interested in. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.
. Old Business:
1. Cemetery obits are still being typed and put on the website. Travis Baer showed the funeral director at Birk’s our Gary website and he was impressed with what we are accomplishing.
2. On Creek clean up- Mary Nosbush suggested contacting Larry Giese to do the back hoeing of the creek bed. Estimated that would be about 5-6 hrs. Possibly use the city truck to get junk in and try to proceed this fall. Charges $75 an hour.
3. Update on cemetery markers- Travis Baer bought first 50 markers for a total bill of $814.03. Travis raised $625 for the project and Houseman and Birks both committed to donating $100 each, which will cover the cost of the markers. Mike Nosbush will do the cementing as time and excess cement permits. Travis suggested possibly using a clear silicon caulk to seal the markers and keep moisture out. Travis also reported that the unmarked graves can be a problem for the grave diggers as they sometimes are digging a new grave only to run into an unmarked gravesite.
4. Knob Hill Trail- Carolynn will donate metal for bridge rails. Leon Kaiser will build them but wants to contact an individual in Canby first to make sure that they are built without any liability issue for him.
5. Mural- Will have Tammy Caanan paint a collage of pictures in the spring on the North Wall of the information center.
6. Possibly use funds raised from Soup Day on October 25 to purchase better cabinets for delicate items in the Museum. Also discussed getting a new door knob, but Travis brought up an idea of putting in a security locking door knob at a cost of about $150. Consensious was to purchase the locking system to secure the door and eliminate the need for multiple keys out. Will enter with a security code to main Museum. Travis will check into this and purchase if cost is right around $150.
7. Decided to have a bake sale on November 4 at the Bank if they will allow us to do that.
8. Gold strike sign- no progress yet.
9. Table moving the flag pole and monument at this time.
10. Post office steps- Kellie Lewis reported that can get 5 railroad ties 8’ long for $80. Kellie and Jim will take care of this.
11. Table purchase of copy machine for now. Will just use ours and buy toner as needed, but with stipulation that if our copy machine quits, a new one will be purchased for us.
12. Decided against the Hundertmark property.
New Business: Pay bills- motion by Mary and second by Travis.
Wal-Mart grant can be applied for use of educational areas, possibly purchased kits at cost of $95 and will be on loan for two weeks as a possible educational activity for kids in our community. Possibly work with Library on using these materials there.
Dr. Elden Lawrence presentation at 2 pm on Sept. 21, at the fire hall and followed with a tour of Indian Lookout and the old cemetery.
Travis is working on fundraising for more markers at the cemetery, sign for information center, computer system; clean up Lac Qui Parle Creek, new cabinets for artifacts. Next year, will look at a walking and biking trail between Gary and Lake Cochrane, and possibly an addition to museum or renovation.
Travis also suggested selling calendars with more pictures of Gary, the railroad, and past years. Possibly sell them for $30 with one ticket in the drawing or $40 with two tickets in the drawing for cash. Try to have a large prize to be drawn before Christmas and several smaller ones throughout the year. Prizes will be based on the number of calendars sold.
Brianna and Jamie reported on plans to have a cowboy poet presentation following the Cattle Drive and Soup Day which we plan to have at the Legion Hall if possible. We will also have the soup day at the Legion Hall. They are also planning to organize a fundraiser following the cowboy poets and to follow that with a barn dance with concessions. Sharlotte Baer will organize the soup day with help from several volunteers. Briana and Jamie will be in charge of planning the cowboy poet event and the barn dance. We are planning this as a family event.
